Overview
Join Penn Clarke on his journey, helped by 70 photos and illustrations in this exciting new book Dolphins & Penn: Tacking Through Life. Dolphins, sailing, and traveling are Penn's passions. Since 1976, he has volunteered time studying dolphins alongside scientists in both natural environments and managed situations. He continues today through his non-profit Dolphin Relief and Research (DolphinRnR), supporting those who protect dolphins in the wild from pollutants and other travesties.
Penn's love for the sea stems from his youth on the waters around New York City and in Illinois. Later as an adult with a 100-ton sail captain's license, he began living aboard and chartering sailboats. Not one to sit still, he decided early on to see the world while young. Penn's travels took him around the world four times, and in his 38-ft sailboat, he completed the Great Loop Trip.
His travels continued on many side trips with surprises that used up some of his nine lives. A major earthquake, a 707-jet plane flying upside down, a train trip through Siberia in 1991? In his writings, Penn brings together fifty years of daily diaries and a lifetime of memories to share stories like his eyewitness account of the 9/11 tragedy from his sailboat. There is no sailing straight into the wind. It is changing course, steering into and through the wind – tacking – that keeps Penn and his Mystic Turtle sailboats moving forward.
