Overview

A year after her brother's peacemaking sacrifice, Dawn Hopkins leads the pacifist Outsiders with nothing but a promise from their prophetic book that she'll bring unity to the bickering factions. But when Nolan Henderson spearheads a Colony effort to seize the book for himself, a shootout thrusts them all back to the brink of war. Each group believes their leader has been killed. Separated from their people by miles of river and a crippling injury, Dawn and Nolan warily agree to stick together to survive, evade the cannibalistic Roamers, and get back before more blood is shed. When an injured Roamer begrudgingly joins their party and promises to help them through Roamer territory, Dawn must trust the people she finds least trustworthy—including herself. Can she make wise choices without the book to guide her? Will she make it back before the Outsiders fracture and are crushed? And will her worst enemies prove to be allies, or do they have darker plans of their own?
