CORNUCOPIA

The horn of plenty

By Dzifa Gakpleazi

Overview

Cornucopia – a Latin word which literally translates as horn of plenty. It is a combination of two words – cornu, meaning horn and copia, meaning abundant. Portrayed by a horn or basket overflowing with flowers, fruits, corn and other harvest staples, it symbolizes abundance and nourishment and has featured prominently as a centerpiece in American Thanksgiving holiday celebrations since the time of the pilgrims. Cornucopia appears in scripture in Deuteronomy 26:1-4 (NIV), "When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, 2take some of the first fruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name... 4 The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God."

Description

Those baskets overflowing with the harvest of the land were a visual representation of God's goodness, blessings and faithfulness in honoring His promises to Israel, to wit, to take them to a land flowing with milk and honey. In contemporary usage cornucopia means an abundant supply of good things of a specified kind. In deciding on a title for this book, which would be published in volumes, I sought for a word that would aptly capture the idea of a receptacle (in this case a book), containing a collection of good things (faith messages) that would glorify God, bless, edify and inspire you. In other words, this book contains an abundant revelation of the good things the Lord has bestowed upon us. This is not a mere collection of stories. It is an assemblage of sermons, testimonies, messages and revelations the Lord has given me over the years, and it gives me much joy to share them with you. Welcome to volume 1 of Cornucopia. Enjoy this precious collection of treasures from the word of God. Wishing you calvary blessings!
