About The Author

Yolanda D. Dawan was born in San Francisco, CA, and lived there until she moved to Oakland, CA, in the 80's with her mother and brothers after a brief period of living in Pacifica, CA. Her formative years were spent running around the streets of Oakland and attending elementary, junior high, and High School, where she graduated from Oakland High in 1989. She is a mother of two wonderful daughters and a grandmother. She started a family at 20, as a sophomore in college. Back then, those around her thought she would end up a statistic - another young African American female having children too soon. Well, that negativity fueled her, and she was determined not to let her circumstances keep her from achieving her goals. She got married in 1994 and had another daughter. By this time, she had been out of college for some time, and the hopes of going back seemed to be slipping away, Undeterred, she began working as an on-site property manager for a small 26-unit complex in San Leandro, CA. This stepping stone would later become the catalyst for her 25-year journey as a property management and real estate professional. More education would soon follow. First came the Bachelor of Science Degree with an emphasis in Project Management. Next was the Master's Degree in Information Systems and Technology Management, earned in 2016 from Capella University. One of the things that fueled her was a drive to always do better. To help those who needed help and wanted to make a change. This was why she later founded Blueprint Project Management. A consulting company that could provide information and support for those who couldn't afford to hire a professional. During her career, she had seen far too many businesses shut down and companies file for bankruptcy from problems that ultimately could have been prevented. In the Black Community, this happened more often. She was determined to try to help prevent this from recurring as much as possible. Today, Yolanda still works in the Commercial Property Management Industry. She has created and hosts a podcast called Blueprint Analysis, where she provides information to help people become the best version of themselves. She interviews people living their truth and making a difference. This book is the first of many she will write. It also has a companion journal called Transforming Chaos to Communication. She would like to encourage anyone considering writing a book to do so. Thank you

Overview

Effective communication is the cornerstone of every successful workplace—but let's be honest, it doesn't always happen that way. This book explores the ongoing challenges of communication in professional environments and offers insight for both speakers and listeners. Because the truth is, not every conversation lands as intended, and not everyone understands how to communicate with clarity and purpose. We often assume that people in leadership roles naturally know how to manage, motivate, and engage others. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. This book unpacks what happens when managers and employees alike struggle to define their roles or fail to communicate effectively—and the ripple effect that it creates throughout an organization. Through real-world stories and a practical look at the communication cycle, you'll gain a deeper understanding of where communication breaks down and, more importantly, why it does. Chaos in the workplace can emerge from anywhere. Daily responsibilities can quickly become overwhelming, and even the most capable professionals can feel pressure when the environment shifts. My goal is to help you recognize the early signs of chaos and overwhelm—and to equip you with strategies to minimize their impact. That begins with understanding your own limits, strengths, and leadership capacity. Let's get started.

Description

Communication, in all its forms, is a key factor in everything we do as humans. We must be able to communicate to convey ideas, information, instructions, love, joy, sadness, and everything else. One area that often gets people into trouble is the meaning or emphasis placed on the words we use. Being able to decipher or decode what someone is saying is key to understanding them. One example I use frequently is a fountain. For some, when you say fountain they will automatically assume it is the machine at the end of the hallway where you can drink water. For others, when you say "fountain," they assume you mean a water feature outside with flowing or rising water that you definitely don't drink from. A single misunderstanding like this could cause a significant problem if "fountain" is not clarified.
