Like many WWII veterans, Richard Matheis had not discussed the details of his WWII flying experiences with either family or friends. All wanted more details as everyone was intrigued about this amazing part of his life. Following a great deal of cajoling by children and grandchildren--little by little his memories began to seep out. Finally, he was urged to write a book about his military and flying experiences. His contention was that there were thousands of men, with whom he had contact, who had far more interesting adventures to reveal. He was convinced that his experiences were the ones important to his many- numbered family and potentially to a much wider audience.
Richard Matheis was a very successful business man following his war years, retiring in Naples Florida, until April 2015, when he passed away at the age of 91. The following weekend after his death, the VMI (Virginia Military Academy) 50th Reunion was held which he had tirelessly organized for the year prior.
