Cant Trust Anyone

By Robert Allen Stowe

Overview

Who can you trust? Well, you start with those you've worked with--and trusted--in the past. When one of your former partners comes to you asking for help, you want to help. When such a past partner asks for help from Charlie Franklin, a lawyer who is more of a fixer, he obliges--maybe because she's a pretty blonde with whom Charlie has fond memories. Maybe he doesn't quite trust her, and maybe he didn't in the past, but Charlie remembers their past trysts. He's a sucker that way. But he's a fixer, making bad past mistakes disappear for some of the best and worst of society. Surely he can handle this little blonde. But as it happens, the issue troubling this enigmatic little blonde smells fishy since it mirrors another case brought in by a local mob boss. Too coincidental. But the blonde's honeysuckle perfume masks the fishy smells. Before he knows what's hit him, Charlie has assembled a team to tackle both cases simultaneously. Yet at every turn, someone asks why it seems like they Can't Trust Anyone.

Description

Charlie Franklin prefers to think of himself as a lawyer--which he is--but his reputation and his profitable practice are more the result of what he does. He's a fixer, the guy you call when you want those bad things you've done to fade away without any notoriety. As such, his clients are among the best and worst of society who trust Charlie to remove their errors in judgement, their sketchy activity, or their embarrassing deeds from public review. Charlie has a lonely life, few friends or partners. When one of them comes calling asking for help, Charlie tries to oblige. When it is a former partner--a pretty blonde that he fondly remembers--asking for Charlie's assistance, he can't seem to say no. Even when a friend points out that she is at best untrustworthy, Charlie is too smitten to refuse. The problem is that her case and another case that just came to Charlie's attention are too much alike. The blonde's case, and the case brought to him from a local mob boss are very similar and very suspicious. Coincidences are never good in Charlie's line of work. Despite his misgivings, Charlie assembles a team to tackle the blonde's problem of a deadly attack which may impact one of their own, while simultaneously fixing the issues facing the mob boss. The two cases are so close to each other in scope, that Charlie devises a plan to make the two into one big case. How to combine the two? Create a giant con job enveloping the very evil and very larcenous characters in both: a not too bright hitman, two money-grubbing businessmen scamming their clients, a slimy millionaire company owner and a willingly corrupt but inexperienced politician. Con jobs, just like scams and political corruption, require the trust of all involved. But as the plans evolve, we discover that too many of the players on each of the sides are working on their own agendas. We discover that you Can't Trust Anyone.
