Overview
Sam and Georgie fall in love while discovering each other in 1961's San Francisco. The title "Brilliant Corners" refers to a great Thelonius Monk piece, but it also refers to everyone's need to see life's details as 'brilliant corners' of experience. Charge your batteries with vivid city details, jazz performances by John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sonny Rollins.
Description
Set in 1961 San Francisco during the 'sunset' of the Beat Era, this novel moves like a jazz trio playing their solos. My three characters (Sam Smith, Hannah Green, and Georgie Steiner) are playing their own versions of the same melody. Each one recognizing how perception and understanding open doors to their own fulfillment. Sam Smith (23) and a Marine veteran, tries to establish a lifestyle in the city. Hannah Green, bored with her upper class life in Los Angeles, sought excitement in the emerging Beat culture of 1956 San Francisco. Georgie Steiner, fresh out of Reed College in Portland, Oregon, also ran down to San Francisco's North Beach to become a Beat icon. Hannah and Georgie conspire to introduce Sam to this Beat world and this event triggers many developments culminating in Sam and Georgie falling in love with each other.
