Overview

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique new fantasy

By Jade Dason May 9, 2015
Bob is such an ordinary name, but I quickly found that he is not an ordinary creature. Not only is he a spider hatchling, but he’s physically challenged, and goes out against all odds to avoid imminent death from the horrible IOW organization of black widow spiders.

The story has its creepy components for people who aren’t fans of spiders, I’ll grant you, but there’s also a full dose of adventure and suspense to go along with it. ‘Bob the Bubble Gum Spider’ is a really creative idea for a fantasy story, and I love finding gems like these that go against the grain of what’s trending and popular in the genre. In terms of Gary Marche’s writing, I would call it anything but simple. The story was obviously carefully crafted and delivered—there’s nothing overly simplistic about Bob’s adventure, which I appreciated. I recommend this one for people who want to try something unique and new in fantasy.

Black Widow Spiders On The Loose and Ready To Destroy....

Bob the Bubble Gum Spider By Gary E. Marche is an intriguing sci-fi fantasy tale with social relevancy from today's issues.

The adventure is enjoyable, the villains are ruthless, the story line is exciting. Yes, this story is high on imagination, but isn't that what true sci-fi fantasy is all about. A world of spiders and one physically challenged hatchling that should be destroyed... or should he?

The author has done an amazing job with characterization and developing the plot.

Great sci-fi/fantasy read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Action packed and engaging! May 5, 2015

First and foremost, I wanted to say that Bob the Bubble Gum Spider entertained me a great deal more than expected. I was interested within the first few paragraphs asLydia and Bob venture out of their silky protection to explore the world around them. It gives a bit of sense of wonder. Like venturing out into the first truly beautiful spring day after a long winter. You learn early on that Bob is not like all the other spiders, but just as quickly you find that he has an attitude of perseverance that is essential to greatness despite the presence of obstacles. There is also an innocence to the writing in the beginning, a child like unawareness, that parallels Bob’s character. That detail really gives the sense that he is new to this world and to life. As he experiences new things you can see the maturity in the wiring increase along with him. I haven’t seen this a lot in books so it stood out for me.

The book introduces new characters immediately and I found that throughout the read that there are a ton of unique and interesting characters, all really there to push the story forward. I love how the author Gary E. Marche really makes the reader think about social norms (and through these spiders of all things). I can really see it paralleling reality in some ways which I always love, as it really gets me thinking. Maybe I am reaching but I loved the idea of having this hatchling spider who isn’t like the others to fight against the social norm to become greater than anyone could have imagined. Sometimes we see those that are different as somehow less value. This is sincerely not the case in this story.

All in all this is an energetic story filled with action, adventure and an all out war to survive, but it the reader centered with an underlying sense of questioning that really kept me engaged. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention something else. Marche seems to know a great deal about spiders and I realized by the end of the book I had gotten a bit of a science lesson on all things spider. Bonus! This was not one of those books that is what I would consider character driven, I didn’t get a sense of being as captivated by the characters but rather by the story and these days that is pretty unique. All in all I have to give it 5 stars.

A fun read

ByVanessa Kingson May 10, 2015

“Bob the Bubble Gum Spider” took me back to a time when storytelling was more innocent and meant to entertain, but also leave a message, a scarce feat that seems lost nowadays where overly complex stories and soulless characters abound.
The story is a fun read for both young and old, with deep messages of growth in the eye of adversity. I especially liked Bob and how the author takes us along for the ride on his journey, fighting against the odds to overcome the obstacles in his path. And, as happens often, those that are different are usually outcasts in society, instead of admiring them for their uniqueness. History has taught us as much many times, where those that we now consider geniuses had to overcome being mocked by their peers at first, but unfortunately it seems that humanity still has a long way to go in accepting what is different or unique.
Even though I am particularly not a big fan of spiders, the book made me look at them in a different and more objective perspective.
In all, a fun read with something for everyone, as well as a high dose of adventure and action, and something to think about after finishing the last page.

About the author

I am an economist with several interdisciplinary journal articles and textbooks.  Good at math but a terrible writer I decided on a novel as a means to improve.  I learned a lot about what it takes to be a writer, which I hadn't appreciated before.  Wouldn't have succeeded if wife, Mary, hadn't served as the intrepid editor. The actual family writer, E'lan, provided all the constructive input.  That said, I wrote it and must take all the blame.

If you've ever been to a meeting in which a skewed or narrow view dominated or noticed that some collective decisions or public policies put too much weight on extremist or possibly religious viewpoints and thought the outcome was, as a consequence, less effective or efficient, then you will understand the allegory in this relatively short novel.  On one level, the story simply promotes secularism as a means to reduce bias and extremism when making collective or public decisions.
