Overview
No matter what the vocation or endeavor, it is the people who go beyond what is expected of them who ultimately achieve the loftiest goals. The standards for excellence sit on a much higher plane than the benchmarks for competency, and everyone makes a choice, either consciously or by default, the path they will travel. Now if you decide you are willing to pay the price for greatness, no matter what the field, it will require a vigilant effort to make sure your daily deeds align with your stated intentions. As a basketball official, if you have chosen to walk the road less traveled, then Beyond the Rules will be an invaluable guidebook on your journey to maximizing your officiating abilities and experiences. This book will also be an insightful read for conscientious basketball coaches and players who are looking for a better understanding of how the game is officiated, as well as fans looking to enhance their basketball viewing experience. Beyond the Rules is a full-access backstage pass for players, coaches and spectators into the thought process and preparation of officials who will be managing their future games. While a firm grasp of the rules is an absolute necessity for any level of officiating success, it is getting beyond the rules where the image of difference lies in making meaningful progress in such a competitive avocation. Getting beyond the rules and immersing oneself in the intangibles of game preparation and game management, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the sophisticated techniques for better court coverage, will make an official more in-demand with assignors, fellow officials, coaches and more respected and appreciated by spectators. So read and dream beyond the rules and take your officiating career, and your basketball experience, farther than you ever thought possible…

So read and dream beyond the rules and take your officiating career, and your basketball experience, farther than you ever thought possible… In the first edition of Beyond the Rules, published last year, the highly-acclaimed book for basketball officials explored many aspects of what it took to be an image-of-difference referee. Clearing knowing the rulebook is an absolute critical component to making the competitive climb up the officiating ladder. But in order to stand out and be tabbed as someone worthy of consideration to be groomed as an elite official requires more than just a grasp of the rulebook. Officials with aspirations for advancement need to go literally, ‘beyond the rules.’ The book has been touted by many respected leaders in the game at all levels as an invaluable guide for a referee to maximize their officiating abilities and experiences. Officials who are getting beyond the rules and immersing themselves in the intangibles of game preparation and game management, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the sophisticated techniques for better court coverage, are becoming more in-demand with assignors, supervisors, fellow officials, coaches and more respected and appreciated by spectators. And now the latest edition, Beyond The Rules – 2, offers officials of all experience levels a practical manual that will serve to sharpen your knowledge of the rules involving the plays that appear many times in every game, as well as the in-game scenarios that occur less frequently, but are important calls to get right. Our goal is to help build an official’s competence and confidence and allows you to bring clarity to any on-court crisis. Volume two also harnesses the power of technology and comes in an e-book package that allows you the flexibility to easily review the material in the unique “60 Second” concept of taking in small, steady portions of relevant educational content for long-term retention. Beyond The Rules – 2 reinforces the foundation of an official’s knowledge of the fundamental rules of the game, as well as providing a better understanding on how to correctly rule on the plays lying just outside the core.
