Overview

Between the Sauce, Stars and Heaven is a deeply personal memoir that stirs together faith, family, and the enduring spirit of a small Italian-American town. Told through the eyes of Lou Basenese, Jr., it's a heartfelt journey through generations of love, loss, humor, and redemption — all simmered in the sauce of tradition and seasoned by the stars of memory and heaven. From his grandparents' voyage from Carpino, Italy, to the bustling streets of Netcong, New Jersey, Lou brings to life the laughter, grit, and faith that defined an entire generation of immigrants. He shares stories of colorful uncles, family feasts, and the unspoken lessons passed around the table, along with his own moments of profound transformation — surviving twelve minutes without a heartbeat, and later, enduring the heartbreaking loss of his son Christopher. Through these moments, Lou discovers what truly matters: love that survives loss, faith that endures doubt, and the power of remembering where we came from. Both intimate and universal, Between the Sauce, Stars and Heaven reminds us that every family has its stories — and that through them, we find the courage to heal, to laugh, and to believe again. Heartfelt, humorous, and deeply human, this memoir invites readers to pull up a chair, pass the bread, and taste the rich blend of joy and sorrow that make a life worth remembering.

Description

Between the Sauce, Stars and Heaven is more than a memoir — it's a stirring tribute to faith, family, and the unbreakable spirit of small-town America. Set against the backdrop of Netcong, New Jersey, Lou Basenese, Jr. weaves a rich tapestry of stories that span generations of Italian-American life — from his grandparents' journey from Carpino, Italy, to his own modern-day reflections on love, loss, and redemption. Told with warmth, humor, and unflinching honesty, Lou invites readers into a world where Sunday dinners stretched into the night, neighbors became extended family, and the kitchen table served as both confessional and comedy stage. Each chapter bubbles with personality — mischievous uncles, resilient parents, and the constant hum of faith holding it all together. The stories are steeped in the smells of garlic and tomato sauce, the laughter of siblings, and the wisdom of a community that never stopped believing in hard work, loyalty, and love. But Between the Sauce, Stars and Heaven isn't just about nostalgia — it's about transformation. Lou recounts the day his heart literally stopped beating for twelve minutes, a near-death experience that forever changed how he viewed faith, family, and the fragile beauty of life. He also opens his heart about the greatest loss a parent can endure — the passing of his beloved son Christopher — and the divine nudge that led him to rediscover his son's handwritten letter just days before the funeral. Through this heartbreak emerges a powerful message of grace, resilience, and hope. What begins as a story of heritage becomes a meditation on life's greatest truths: that love outlasts grief, that faith can light even the darkest nights, and that every family — no matter how imperfect — carries a touch of heaven in its embrace. Lou's storytelling is cinematic and soulful, blending humor and heartache in equal measure. Readers will find themselves laughing one moment and wiping tears the next. His ability to honor the quirks and complexities of family life — from porch-side conversations with uncles to the quiet strength of his parents, Louie and Eva — transforms his personal memories into universal reflections on what it means to belong, to forgive, and to believe. At its core, Between the Sauce, Stars and Heaven is a love letter — to faith, to family, and to the generations who came before us. It's for anyone who has ever sat around a crowded table, shared a story, or felt the gentle pull of their ancestors whispering through time. Poignant, funny, and profoundly human, this memoir reminds us that even in our darkest moments, there's light to be found — sometimes in a simmering pot of sauce, sometimes in the night sky above, and sometimes in the quiet spaces between the stars and heaven.

About The Author

Lou Basenese, Jr. is a storyteller at heart — a son of Netcong, New Jersey, a small Italian-American town where faith, family, and food shaped not just his childhood, but his soul. His debut memoir, Between the Sauce, Stars and Heaven, is a heartfelt journey through generations of love, loss, humor, and redemption — told with equal parts reverence and grit. Born into a large Italian-American family — his father one of eleven children and his mother one of seven — Lou grew up surrounded by Sunday dinners that turned into symphonies of laughter and arguments over sauce, sports, and saints. His roots trace back to Carpino, Foggia, Italy, where his grandparents — Gabriel and Donata Basenese — began a legacy of faith, hard work, and community that flourished in the heart of Netcong. Through richly told stories, Lou honors that legacy while exploring the universal bonds that connect all families — their sacrifices, their secrets, and their unbreakable spirit. Beyond his storytelling, Lou has lived a life marked by both triumph and trial. A near-death experience from a heart attack — twelve minutes without a pulse — forever changed his perspective on faith, gratitude, and purpose. The devastating loss of his son Christopher to fentanyl poisoning deepened his understanding of love and grief, turning his writing into both a tribute and a healing journey. Every page of Between the Sauce, Stars and Heaven carries the heartbeat of a man who has seen life from both sides — and come back determined to live it with grace and meaning. Professionally, Lou built an accomplished career leading divisions of Fortune 500 companies before co-founding On-Site Fleet Services of Florida with his wife, Laura. Together, they built the company from the ground up into a thriving, certified Women-Owned business that has proudly served the transportation industry for more than sixteen years. Their leadership philosophy mirrors their family values: treat people like family, give more than you take, and always leave something better than you found it. Today, Lou continues to write and publish through his imprint, Lou Tells Tales, expanding his storytelling into multiple genres. His upcoming works include: Rebel and The Rooster, a children's adventure series that celebrates friendship, courage, and curiosity; Just Enough, the inspiring true story of the 1951 undefeated Netcong High School football team made up of gritty Italian-American immigrants; and The Porch of Saints and Secrets, a sweeping generational saga exploring how faith and family can both protect and haunt us. Through all of his work, Lou's guiding thread is connection — to family, to faith, to community, and to the simple, extraordinary beauty of everyday life. His words invite readers to slow down, remember where they came from, and rediscover what truly matters between the sauce, the stars, and heaven. Lou lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife Laura, where together they lead their business, nurture their growing family, and continue to believe that love — in all its forms — is the greatest story ever told.
