Born to an American diplomat, raised abroad, educated at Notre Dame and Harvard. Fluent in three languages, commanded destroyer and cruiser as well as a carrier Battlegroup. Retired at 50 years of age and moved onto a corporate career as Oresident of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems building capital ships for the Navy he served in uniform.
