Overview

"A forbidden love, a scandalous trial, and the true story that inspired a literary classic."

In 1817, the real crime isn’t abortion—it is sex outside of marriage. Behind the Scarlet Letter uncovers the true story of a Connecticut teenager’s illicit pregnancy, a coerced abortion, and her tangled love affairs with both a minister and a doctor. This compelling narrative offers an alternative perspective to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, delving into the emotional and societal consequences of abortion in early 19th-century America. Told through multiple viewpoints, the novel confronts the complex and charged issues surrounding morality and choice during that era.

Description

Life begins with ensoulment. When seamstress Asenath "Caroline" Smith first hears these words, they shake her to the core. By 1817, America is changing, and Caroline, a fatherless teenager from Connecticut, finds herself an unwilling witness against one of her two lovers—a minister and a doctor. Accused of "a brutal and high-handed assault on the body of Asenath Caroline Smith," one man faces a trial by jury that will alter their lives forever. Years later, Nathaniel Hawthorne will draw inspiration from this intimate, powerful, and infamous 19th-century trial to craft a story of love and lust, crime and punishment, sin and redemption. Behind the Scarlet Letter: Based on a True Story uncovers the origin of the criminalization of abortion in America, offering a compelling read for anyone seeking to understand the personal side of this history. This emotionally gripping historical novel addresses a sensitive subject with honesty and brilliance.
