Description

Former Army Ranger Jake Spinner spends most of his days in a tequila-induced fog. Between bouts of binge drinking and episodes of PTSD, he works as a fishing guide in a sleepy village in Baja California, Mexico. After the body of Spinner's estranged fishing partner washes up on the rocks, he becomes obsessed with finding his friend's murderers. His search leads him to a reluctant alliance with Emily Rosen, a feisty New York Times reporter, and a team of marine biologists. They have discovered an illegal Japanese dolphin hunt and whaling operation run by the Yakuza, vicious criminals who will stop at nothing to harvest these valuable marine mammals. Outnumbered and outgunned, Spinner, Rosen, and an unlikely assemblage of scientists, activists, and fishermen must come up with a plan to stop the impending slaughter--without getting themselves killed in the process.

About the author

John R. Gentile, an Arizona native, has a diverse background that includes SCUBA diving, sea kayaking, rock climbing and wildlife photography. For ten years, he and his marine biologist wife, Katie Iverson, observed and photographed a population of bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of California. He and Katie have kayaked with orcas in British Columbia, traveled to the headwaters of the Amazon in Peru, photographed the wildlife in Tanzania, circumnavigated the continent of Australia, and led trips to Baja California, Mexico, to observe dolphins and whales. His writing incorporates epic story telling with likable yet flawed characters, insightful moments with wildlife, and just a touch of mysticism. "Baja Redemption," an eco-thriller, is his fourth novel and the first book in the Guardians of Gaia series.

Awesome novel! Baja Redemption is such a fantastic story of how a group of hard-working people take on the powerfully rich, and win, in order to save the whales and dolphins of Baja. I just loved this book. It was so intense that I simply couldn't put it down. I love rooting for the underdog, Jake Spinner and getting his revenge against those who hurt him and his friends. Baja Redemption by Tim Fagan For me, Baja Redemption was a delight to read. As a person who has visited southern Baja California multiple times and seen the whales and dolphins at close range, sometimes close enough to touch, this book brings back a multitude of memories. The sights and sounds are accurately and beautifully depicted and presented. The descriptions of the food reminds me of fragrant, sumptuous and satisfying meals. For those who have seen, followed, and even touched, the dolphins and whales, and observed the family interactions, this book accurately and beautifully depicts them. Observation of the individuals and pods reveals that these are sentient beings, who no more deserve to be killed than our fellow humans. The beauty and grandeur of the land, sky and sea are revealed, as are the beauty and friendliness of the people. The characters are well developed and believable. There is a great deal of exciting action, on land, sea and in the air. This book inspired me to make a return trip as soon as possible. For those who have never been to southern Baja, it should create the desire to experience this for yourselves. Read more

Baja Redemtion review by Melissa I loved this book: a classic good vs. bad thriller with beautiful descriptions of Baja's landscape and sea-life. The human characters are engaging, and the face-paced, cliff-hanger plot hooked me from the first few pages. I especially enjoyed learning about the lives of dolphins and whales in the Sea of Cortez.
