Auntie M. Speaks is a memoir about Margaret's childhood and beyond in a mostly Black community, segregated by white politics, that created a village in the Central District (CD) of Seattle, where she and her siblings were nurtured in the nineteen-fifties and sixties. Despite redlining, they lived in a safe, healthy environment with friends, backyard gardens, fruit trees, and no fences. The elders- mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, and neighbors- canned vegetables and fruits, bottled libations, made preserves, baked the best cakes and pastries, and the families worked in domestic and maintenance roles. Her story is about the resilience of the community, the power of nature to heal, and her confidence to venture out to the wider community of adulthood and employment.

Set against the Pacific Northwest rainforest, evergreens, the universe, and through visual art and poetry, Margaret S. Barrie's book, Auntie M. Speaks, explores her early childhood with family and community. And, in young adulthood, the conscription of former classmates in the Vietnam War. She lived in her mother's house for eighteen years, and a fire burned it down to the ground, leaving nothing but ashes. She lived through several snowstorms while driving solo through a mountain range and driving a bus in the city. Her travel adventures include hiking in Mt Baker National Forest and visiting Mexico. In her elderhood, she chronicles the loss of her brother, niece, and the family dog. She observes nature in the forests and on the eastern horizon at sunrise, and more.
