At Maureen's

At Maureen's is a double journal offering a Rashomon-like take on a month spent housesitting in Connecticut. Two poets from the bohemian enclaves of the East Village of Manhattan do what they can to acclimate to their new rural surroundings: a horse, raspberries, visitors, diapers, books, each other and sustained moments of concentration. It's back to the garden for two writers and their families and friends. Only in this patch, which are weeds and which are flowers is not so certain. Two perspectives of the proceedings are on offer with sustained moments of concentration that enhance the details. Wonder and love blossom too.

At the time this book was written, summer 1981, Bernadette Mayer was director of the Poetry Project, a literary center housed in St. Mark’s Church in the East Village of Manhattan. She is the author of numerous books of poetry and prose, including A Bernadette Mayer Reader and The Helens of Troy, NY (New Directions). Greg Masters was editor of the Poetry Project Newsletter and co-editor of the poetry magazine Mag City.

Bernadette Mayer was born in Brooklyn, New York. She has taught at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, the New School for Social Research, College of Staten Island and New England College. She was the artistic director of the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church from 1980 to 1984. She edited the journal 0 TO 9 with artist Vito Acconci and established United Artists press with Lewis Warsh. Her collections of poetry and prose include Midwinter Day (1982, 1999), Utopia (1984), A Bernadette Mayer Reader (1992), The Desire of Mothers to Please Others in Letters (1994), Another Smashed Pinecone (1998), Scarlet Tanager (2005) and Poetry State Forest (2008). She lives in East Nassau, New York.
