About the author
The Chief Psychiatrist for Peachstate Psychiatric Services, Inc. is Dwight A. Owens, M.D. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his medical doctorate from the Health Science Center (HSC) at Syracuse in 1994. He then returned to Macon, Georgia where he attended Mercer University’s School of Medicine, and obtained an internship certificate in the area of Family Medicine. In 1998 Dr. Owens returned to Syracuse to complete his formal Psychiatry training, and also served as the chief resident in his final year in Syracuse. On completion of his Adult and General Psychiatry training, he attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry, (Psychiatry and the Law). In 1999 he became board certified in Adult and General Psychiatry in October. Dr. Owens’ work experience includes working with the forensic populations in both Fulton and DeKalb counties. He has worked at the Lee Arendale State prison as a contract psychiatrist. He has been a staff and clinical director for the Fulton County Department of Community Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Addictive Diseases. He later served as the Medical Director of all the Fulton County mental health facilities from October 1999 to September 2005. Dr. Owens was a teacher for the Osler Institute, in the department of Psychiatry and he has also served as an adjunct assistant clinical professor for the Morehouse School of Medicine’s department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Among many of his accolades he served as a physician surveyor for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Dr. Owens, the chief psychiatrist of Peachstate Psychiatric Services, has received a number of prestigious awards. In 1997, in St.Thomas, Virgin Islands, USA, he received the Resident Research Award presented by the Black Psychiatrist of America. In 1998, he was honored with the Eleventh Annual Chester M. Pierce, M.D. Sc.D. Award in New Orleans, Louisiana. The National Medical Association honored Dr. Owens with the Ernest Y. Williams Clinical Scholar of Distinction Award in 1999 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Owens is a financial member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was inducted as a member of 100 Black Men of America in 2003. He was also a participant in the United Way’s VIP program in the fall of 2004. He was recently awarded the Cambridge Who’s Who Award in 2007 and the Patients’ Choice.Aw As a practicing physician, Dr. Dwight A.
