Overview
Every piece of clothing tells a story. After meeting for years, supporting each other's work, these colleagues decided to try something new—a collaboration. They dug into their closets and discovered that personal essays about clothes—on everything from fringe jackets and fishing vests to bridal tulle and Beatles T-shirts—have the power to evoke memories, not just for themselves, but for everyone that reads them.
Description

Altered is a two-hundred-page journey through the personal lives of ten women writers who have known each other's work, but not details from each other's pasts. Anchored by archival photographs, each essay depicts how an article of clothing changed the writer from childhood on through marriages, careers and families. The essays run the gamut of emotions, including the joy of discovering new freedoms and the grief that comes with loss.

Great Collection of Stories to Enjoy and Get You Thinking This is a great collection of individual stories. The authors wrote about how items of clothing characterized and affected their childhood or teenage years - their relationships with their parents and siblings, their classmates and teachers, and their view of themselves. Each story drew me into another person's life. Most of all, reading these stories made me realize how clothing and the interactions that involve clothing affected my own childhood, my perception of myself and of my future in a way I had not realized until I read this book. For example, I remember that when my mother and I came home from shopping for new school clothes for elementary school each fall, my father would say how nice I looked and then say, "You look just like a college student." Altered - Great fun! I love this book! So real and evocative. Reading it was like going on a girlfriends' weekend and telling each other stories over 3 days of hanging out together at a cabin in the mountains. Cozy! Friendly! Yummy! Read more
