Alexander's Apple Cart Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite Not all stories have intense meanings, hidden messages, or lessons to be taught and learned. Sometimes a story is just a story. An especially good story is a feel-good story. That’s what Alexander’s story is. Alexander is a cat with no ears. He carts his wagon full of apples all over town, selling his apples for a dime each. One day a new customer asks Alexander what happened to his ears. Alexander doesn’t remember. He starts to notice his customers' very unique ears. Each customer has a hat or headband with ears like theirs to try on, but they’re just not right for Alexander. Finally, the cat collects his dimes from all the apples sold and visits the town’s hat shop. Surely there’ll be the right hat with the right ears in that hat shop. Terri and Molly Gates are a mother-daughter team who collaborated to write a sweet little cat story, Alexander’s Apple Cart. Alexander is a real cat, rescued from the cold winter, with no ears. Using this real character, the two authors and illustrator devised a fun story about an apple-selling cat with no ears and his search for the perfect ears. There is a viable plot, lovable characters (all animals), and, even though the authors claim there is no theme or hidden message, perhaps there is: that we’re all different and we should celebrate our differences in style, ears or no ears. I’m sure there’s also a message in there about caring for rescued strays (cats or dogs). The end of the story includes a short biography of the real Alexander, complete with his picture. A sweet, charming little story that will warm the hearts of all who read it. I hope this author team will write many more books together. Read more
