A Shared Memoir of Love and Adventure

By Bill and Jeannette Thomson

Overview

Bill was a geopolitical analyst and international economist experienced in development and capital markets issues, with a longstanding and deep interest in Asian economic developments. He started off in Seattle working as an engineer for Boeing and worked for NASA on the Apollo project sending the first man to the moon. He relocated to Manila in the Philippines whilst working for the Asian Development Bank. Soon after, he met Jeannette and the rest as they say is history… Bill and Jeannette are 'Opposite Ends of the Spectrum', totally different from each other in opinions, styles, preferences. He took pride in being politically incorrect, Jeannette is the practical, sensible one. They have laughed at each other since the day they met in the mid 80s. Travelling became one of their obsessions; from the mountains of Nepal, Jeannette explored Mt Everest by flying the deathifying Russian aeroplanes. Food is love, they both enjoy eating exotic foods which means she cooks amazing East meets West gorgeous dishes: Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Chinese inspired cuisines and Bill eats them. Despite their 20 year age difference, they were happily married for thirty seven years. Laughter, exotic foods, travelling, quirky children kept them together.

About The Author

Bill and Jeannette are opposite ends of the spectrum, totally different from each other in opinions, styles and preferences. He took pride in being politically incorrect, Jeannette is the practical, sensible one. They have laughed with each other since the day they met in the mid 80s. They met through their friend Chedy, their matchmaker, but it almost did not happen because of her Filipino culture - she had to play hard to get, you see. Bill's two passions were cricket and travel and he pursued these fascinations throughout his lifetime. He was extremely humble and he would not have reached the pinnacle of his life if not for his DNA and hard work. Despite their 20-year age difference, they were happily married for nearly 40 years. Laughter, travelling, cricket, exotic foods and quirky children kept them together. I would like to express my profound gratitude to Brian Britton, Christine Brooks, Alison Thomson-Chaput de Saintonge, Habib Farris, Ron King, Philip Mappin, Barbara Suzuki, Alistair Thomson, Craig Thomson, Ken Waller, Rick Adkinson who obliged in contributing to Bill's memoir. *** 'To walk with Bill Thomson through his extraordinary life is a privilege: his humour and love of adventure are inspirational. A giant.' Dame Joanna Lumley DBE FRGS 'Bill led a fascinating life spanning a period of great cultural and political change. This is a great read.' Gregg Wallace, MBE 'Go as far as you can see and see how far you can go.' Nellie Thomson, Bill's mum.
