Overview

Decktora Raines is on leave from the CIA, trying to escape memories of the agent she lost and the disappearance of her life partner, Alex. But when a Russian defector she once handled unexpectedly reaches out to her, urging her to come to London, her instincts take over. She arrives to find that a Russian emigre has been murdered, and the only clues are claw marks and an unidentified white powder.

Description

When CIA officer Decktora Raines arrives in England at the invite of a defector she once handled, she learns that a Russian emigre has been murdered in London. The only clues are claw marks and an unidentified white powder. The bodies pile up, and the Metropolitan Police of London and the public begin to think that a serial killer is on the loose. But Decky and her defector know it's the Russians. And as the claw murders increase, with some of Decky's London contacts falling victim, she must put the bad memories behind her and rely on finely-honed instincts to find the killers and figure out what they have to gain—and how to stop them from killing again.

Fun Read I just finished this book by my friend Luck Kirk who was an office mate many years ago in San Francisco. It is a great spy yarn, professionally written and a real page turner. If you have been in the business, you will appreciate the authenticity of the narrative and when you finish you will not be disappointed!! Is it just a coincidence that the heroine and the author only drink white wine? Read more

Engrossing Spy Novel! Lucy Kirk has written a terrific spy novel greatly enhanced by her inside knowledge of the world of espionage through her 30+ years as a career officer in the CIA. It takes place in London in 2012 which gives it a very contemporary feel along with an authentic sense of the city based on Kirk's long posting there. Decktora Raines is the perfect protagonist to share insights into the inner workings of the various agencies, both English and American, she encounters as she tries to unravel the impetus that brought her to London - a message from a Russian defector she once handled who desperately needs her help. The story unfolds at a rapid pace and is populated by memorable characters whom Kirk creates to give depth and intrigue to the plot. The resolution is both credible and satisfying. It leaves the reader hoping for more adventures with the very likable and totally human Decktora Raines! Read more

Not male and stale After 50 years of reading spy novels by men about men, I found this first novel by an experienced female spy to be encouraging. The woman in the story is not arm candy, she’s the protagonist. The plot is “ripped from the headlines” and its dialogue and casually introduced spycraft make it a page turner. Read more
