Carmen, affectionately called Saucy, was born to Beatrice, a child herself, in a small village in Jamaica's hinterland. Beatrice, now called Mama by all, survives the taunts and jeers of family and friends, and migrates to the United States to find a better way for herself and her fatherless child who she has left in the care of her mother. The story traces the misadventures of Mama and Saucy, as they embark on their journey seeking the American Dream. It allows the reader to experience the travails of a mother trying to make something of herself and her daughter, while sometimes using quite unsavory methods. The reader is allowed to experience Brooklyn, New York, in the decade of the seventies into the early eighties, the characters and their prejudices, their island habits, their hopes and their fears. Saucy is the one bright spot in the otherwise murky world of drugs, obeah, and sexual aberrations. As we follow her story, we experience the unpleasantness of parental over-protection, the joys of young love, the pain of deception and yet we are able to rejoice in the beauty of self worth, and the fact that good always wins over all else. This is the story of the misadventures of Saucy and her Mama.

Dobby Dobson burst into prominence as leader of the group "Dobby and the Deltas" while attending Kingston College, Jamaica, in the sixties. Their first song, written by Dobson as an ode to his Biology teacher, entitled 'Cry a little Cry' was a poignant testimony of unrequited teenage love and sat at the number one spot on Radio Jamaica for three weeks. Dobby's writing skills produced several ditties including 'Sweeter than Honey', 'Seems to me I'm losing' and 'Loving Pauper', which have been recorded by numerous singers including luminaries such as Freddy McGregor, Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths, Gregory Isaacs and UB40. He has also written articles for Jamaica's premier tabloid, 'The Star'. In this, his first full length novel, set in the decade of the mid seventies to mid eighties, Dobby traces the adventures of a single mother "Mama" who, like so many other mothers of that era, in search of a better life, leaves her daughter "Saucy", in the care of her grandmother and migrates to New York City. The story traces Mama's adventure in the Big Apple, swinging the reader back and forth between the glamorous life in Brooklyn, New York and the cruel situations facing her child in the tiny country village in Jamaica. It runs the gamut of the Brooklyn nightlife, the Jamaican nightclubs, the storefront churches, the drug trade, the gang wars, unbridled love and stark infidelity. You will marvel at Mama's gall and atrocities and revel in Saucy's youthful goodness. His characters are fleshed out and take on lives of their own. Dobby will laughingly boast that he typed his manuscript tediously and one-fingeredly on his IPad, showing his calloused right index finger as evidence.
