The book serves as an introduction for the novice and a reference for advanced practitioners. The sections explore basic technique and traditional forms to illustrate the organized and disciplined process of developing skill and well-being.

Description

Isshinryu Karate is practiced worldwide by thousands of devotees. In this book, Mr. Washabaugh presents a unique perspective gleaned from over four decades of practice. Any martial art has a core from which to build upon. The core of Isshinryu establishes a well defined form which is essential for long term growth and expertise. The form is introduced by established and specific basic exercises and by the first three kata, Seisan, Seiunchin, and Naihanchi. These kata (forms) are centuries old and can be considered like encyclopedia of karate practices and are examined in detail. This book defines core techniques, i.e. strikes, blocks, and kicks, and kata concepts of offense, defense, posture, and movement. These are presented in an organized and  efficient manner reflective of Isshinryu practice. They are accompanied by several illustrations. Also included is a historical perspective and an exploration of mind/body/spirit connections. This core of Isshinryu establishes the purpose of training: self-defense, self-improvement, and perfection of character.

About the author

Donald Washabaugh is a senior member of the Isshinryu World Karate Association headquartered in Okinawa, Japan. In 2015, after forty years of practice, he was awarded the rank of 8th Dan by IWKA President, O'Sensei Kichiro Shimabuku. He has been a student, teacher, and competitor, but simply considers himself a practitioner. Referred to as 'sensei' by his students, Mr. Washabaugh follows the tradition of Isshinryu Karate as transmitted directly from Isshinryu founder Tatsuo Shimabuku (1908-1975) to William H. Duessel (1927-2014), his teacher for four decades. In 2005, Mr. Washabaugh was inducted into the Okinawan Isshinryu Karate and Kobudo Association Hall of Fame and in 2015 was awarded the prestigious Tatsuo Shimabuku Award by O'Sensei Kichiro Shimabuku. Mr. Washabaugh enjoyed success as a tournament competitor since 1981 and has served many times as a tournament referee and judge.
