Overview
The Catskills of Sullivan County: A Photography Journey contains 100 pages of photographs that attempt to capture the essential beauty of nearly every town and village in the region. The book focuses mostly on nature but also includes some gorgeous architecture and some of the area's residents. Author Rich Klein hopes the book will be a definitive record of what the former "Borscht Belt" looked like in the early 21st century.
Description

The Catskills of Sullivan County: A Photography Journey grew out of a desire by author Rich Klein to capture the essential beauty of the region in the early 21st century. Having spent every summer in the area from 1967 through 1977 at two sleepaway camps, he noticed that so much of the gorgeous landscape was unchanged when he moved full time to the region in 2006. The book focuses on landscapes but also includes some historic buildings, wildlife and even some residents at public gatherings. Klein, who owns Rich Klein New York Photography, also co-authored Massapequa: A Pictorial History Through The Eyes of Baby Boomers, published in 2014.

About the author

Photographer Rich Klein has spent his life in many cities and towns across beautiful New York State.

Born in Manhattan, raised on Long Island and a graduate of SUNY New Paltz, he lived in Sullivan County's Catskills from 2016 until 2020. During that time, he shot thousands of photos.

A long-running exhibit of his Sullivan Catskills prints were on display inside Eleanor's Country Kitchen at the Villa Roma Resort from 2018 through early 2024.

Since mid November 2018, photographs from the Catskills book have been on display on the first floor of the Sullivan County Government Center in Monticello NY.

From March 2024 through June 2024, prints from the Catskills book will be on display at The Narrowsburg Union (Narrowsburg, NY).

Klein is a former member of the Catskill Art Society and an associate board member of the Liberty Museum & Arts Center, where he helped curate a major Summer 2017 exhibit "Barns of the Catskills." In 2017-2018, his photojournalism works that featured local firefighters were on display in the windows of the Museum.

Among other local displays, his large photo print of the Roman Colosseum is also on display at Colosseo Family Restaurant and Pizzeria in Monticello.

He is a former member of the Sullivan County Visitors Association and was also previously a member of the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce and the steering committee of the Bethel Council of the Arts.

He is currently a member of the Fort Lee Artist Guild and Creative Bergen, both in New Jersey.

Klein is also the co-author of Massapequa: A Pictorial History Through the Eyes of Baby Boomers and has participated in more than 20 exhibits around Long Island in 2015-2016. He has a permanent photography exhibit at Northwell Health/GoHealth Urgent Care in his hometown of Massapequa, where a large print from that book is on permanent display at the Massapequa Public Library.

In 2024, he is working on his third book "30 Women Over 50 From One Town."

Klein is also the winner of two art festival awards in New Jersey. In September 2021, he took first place in photography at the Roselle Park NJ Art Festival and second place in photography at the Edgewater Art and Music Festival.
