The idea for the Surgical Oncology Manual was generated by the general surgical oncology fellows at the University of Toronto. The Surgical Oncology Manual reflects the current approach to the management of surgical oncology in General Surgery at the University of Toronto. The manual provides consensus of opinion on how to treat patients with particular malignancies. The manual outlines the essential elements of diagnosis, staging, and clinical management of solid tumors treated in surgical practice within the context of the Canadian healthcare system. The authors emphasize the importance of multidisciplinary treatment planning, including referral to multidisciplinary cancer conferences and to other specialties. The target audience for this book includes medical students, general surgery residents, fellows and practicing general surgeons. The manual was written in such a way that it focuses on patient care and provides a step by step approach as to how the patient should be clinically managed. Each chapter includes " Toronto Pearls" in the management of each malignancy, and provides guidance regarding how clinicians at the University of Toronto manage cancer. An extensive review of the literature was completed and is included in the reference list. The manual also includes seminal papers that must be familiar to anyone dealing with cancer patients. Key papers in each oncologic subspecialty and their outcomes are summarized in tables for easy reference. Although there are similar books available in nature to this manual, the Surgical Oncology Manual provides a more practical and evidence based approach to patient management, that is easy to use and read.
