Using language young children can understand, Sammy explains concepts such as cancer, chemotherapy, and the disease process. Sammy beautifully teaches the reader that even though her father may die, their love and memories will live on forever. About the author


Author: Dr. Erica Hill Sirrine is a clinical social worker, university professor, and grief counselor. She has extensive experience in the field of death, dying, and bereavement and has earned the designation of Fellow in Thanatology by the Association for Death Education and Counseling. Dr. Sirrine is the former director of a bereavement center where she counseled grieving children, adolescents, and adults. She recognizes the value of using books to help children and families navigate life events and facilitate challenging conversations.  Dr. Sirrine is passionate about creating programs and interventions that help children and adults process illness, loss, and grief in healthy ways. This picture book addresses various aspects of serious illness, death, and dying that adults often find difficult to discuss with their children.


Illustrator: Lindsay Deibler, has a B.S. in Interior Design from Florida State University, and she has always enjoyed painting, crafting and making crazy cakes as another way to express her creativity. She is the principal designer/owner of Lindsay Deibler Interiors in Winston-Salem, NC. She resides with her husband, two boys, and two dogs, one of which is a trained therapy dog.

The author and illustrator met at Florida State University where they were members of Chi Omega Fraternity. Their continued friendship led to this beautiful collaboration 20 years later.
