Overview
"Required reading for every parent who has a child in drug treatment!" "We wish we would have had this while our son was in rehab." Rehab Works! A Parent’s Guide To Drug Treatment spells out everything parents need to know about the world of adolescent substance abuse treatment, and allows them to take control of an experience that can ultimately save their child’s life. There is no question about it: Teen substance abuse is a problem of epidemic proportion in the United States. Media glamorization of drug use fuels impressionable minds, while celebrities have made going to rehab something between a status symbol and a joke. Yet everyday, more and more parents find themselves in the terrifying position of trying to figure out what to do upon discovering that their child is using drugs. “Going to rehab” is the solution to an addiction problem, yet the public perception of “rehab” becomes tainted as a result of frighteningly high relapse rates. The good news, however, is that rehab works! Becoming an “educated consumer” is the first step towards successfully helping a child overcome an addiction problem. The problem is, when a teen lands in substance abuse treatment, most parents have no idea how it works or what to expect. Learning how to utilize “the product” (treatment) more effectively allows the consumer to gain maximum benefit from the experience. A nationally recognized expert in the field of adolescent substance abuse treatment, Jim Savage, LCDC presents this information in an authentic and engaging manner. His own experience of having been a teenage drug addict and subsequent recovery figures significantly into his approach and provides unique credibility when addressing these issues. The result is an attractive blend of academic sophistication with an easy-going, personable style, making Rehab Works! A Parent’s Guide To Drug Treatment an enjoyable, yet thorough read.

About the author
Having worked as a licensed chemical dependency counselor specializing in adolescent treatment for over 28 years, Jim Savage has helped hundreds of teens overcome drug problems. The experience of having operated his own intensive outpatient treatment program for over ten years led to the overwhelming realization of the gaping hole that exists with regard to community awareness about substance abuse. This served as the impetus to develop an educational program called “5 Things Every Parent Should Know About Teen Substance Abuse”, which is aimed at raising public awareness by teaching parents and professionals about assessment, prevention, intervention, and treatment. Jim is in private practice in Dallas, Texas, where he provides supportive services for substance abuse clients and their families. He also provides consulting services for a number of treatment programs nationally. Throughout his career Jim has been known for his special ability to connect with young people. In addition to his clinical skills, he is an accomplished professional musician. You name it, he plays it- from guitar, keyboards, or bass to Native American flute and assorted percussion instruments. (He even handled the John Lennon parts in a popular Beatles cover band for many years!) A gifted singer and a songwriter, Jim has turned his passion for music into an effective way of working with substance abuse clients. A centerpiece of Jim’s work is The Journey—a rock musical he wrote that tells a story about addiction and recovery. It is used in treatment to help clients identify their own process by relating to the songs and acting out their stories through stage productions of the musical program. Jim's creative approach and unique body of work make him a sought after presenter at conferences and seminars.
