When Mariam Abdullah learns that her parents have promised her in marriage to the son of their friends, the weight of an unwanted future threatens to suffocate her. Mariam has been keeping a secret, and in Iran, such a secret could get her killed. But when she discovers that her best friend, Amina, has been harboring the same feelings, she wonders what would be worse—severe punishment at the hands of her country and being disowned by her family, or the chance, however risky, to explore a life where she can be who she really is.
