Description

This unconventional how-to beauty book takes a hilarious and easy-to-learn approach to the most commonly-asked questions regarding beauty, skincare, aging, and makeup application. From the mind of an inappropriate comedian and makeup artist, and complete with illustrations, you get the best of both worlds. This isn't your standard beauty how-to book. If you scour social media for the latest beauty videos, or if you love spending your day off browsing the aisles in Sephora, you'll love this book! Go behind the scenes into the crazy beauty industry from the perspective of a makeup artist and comedian living in Los Angeles, where there's never a shortage of comic material. From quirky encounters to the over-the-top and hilarious observations. Maybe even a touching life lesson or two (awww), paired with easy-to-learn and easier-to-perfect beauty tips at the end of every illustrated chapter. You'll learn while laughing how to determine your skin type, why you should use a primer before foundation application, and how to perfect your winged liner. Make Me Pretty, Make Me Laugh, is where cosmetics and comedy collide!

About the author

Jeremy Beth Michaels started performing stand-up comedy in San Franciso 1999, where she built up her chops and tore down her self-esteem on stage nightly. She ultimately decided that if she had to work 40 hours a week to pay her rent and possibly eat before she 'hit it big' as a comedian, it better be around pretty stuff like perfume, lipstick, bronzer, and eye shadow. She began her makeup career the same year she started Stand-Up comedy when she took a job in the customer service call center at Sephora.com. Soon she'd learned about every high-end line in existence at the time, whether it be a makeup (color) brand, fragrance, or skincare item. There she built up her vast beauty knowledge, all while slinging jokes at the local comedy clubs and broken-down coffee shops at night. In 2002, she took the plunge and took her hilarity—and her makeup bag—to Los Angeles. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2013, she realized she needed to take a break from being on the stage while she healed and got her strength back. What she found is that she wasn't the only one that wanted to feel pretty during times of duress and like most people, she wanted to try to keep the humor in her life even while going through something life-changing. Beauty has always been her refuge and there's nothing that makes a person feel better than looking their best. She wanted to pass on her extensive beauty knowledge with a humorous slant. She has been on the Tonight Show for 30 long seconds, featured in the San Jose Mercury News, and had the pleasure of warming up the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose two years in a row. She has been a content contributor for Moronlife.com, Daily Ovation, and Preen.me. She has been published in The Comedy Thesaurus by Judy Brown, alongside Dave Chappelle, Tina Fey, and many others. She toured with "Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad". She has produced many comedy shows under the names Comic Fusion, Audible Candy and La Vida Joqua in San Francisco and Los Angeles. She is currently co-producing Unholy Comedy at The Pig and Whistle in Los Angeles, the second Thursday of every month.

What a fun ride I'm not even into makeup and I couldn't put this book down. It is funny, sincere, and has legit makeup and skincare tips. I've been telling all my friends about it - great for a gift! It's such a fun read I have it on my coffee table so people will ask about it. Read more

Definitely made me laugh! (and I’m prettier) This book is hilarious! I wasn’t expecting a helpful book like this to be so funny, but I would have read it just for the humor. The author seems to really know her stuff about beauty and I’ve gotten so much from her tips and advice. But it’s also super funny! I highly recommend. Read more
