Overview
I Want to Tell You About My Friend Walter invites the reader to look through the eyes of a young boy as he tells us about the remarkable and inspiring life of Walter, his elder friend. Our narrator teaches us that even though we might be from different generations, friendship knows no age and we have much to learn from one another.
Description
Older elementary students will enjoy Walter's true story, told by a fictional young boy who, like Walter, loves the ocean. Teachers will find this book an introduction to studies of history through interviewing sages in their lives. Through the young boy's eyes, we travel all over the world as we learn about Walter and his adventures. We follow Walter as a very young child, learning to read, through high school, two wars, and a variety of impressive, later-in-life careers. We learn how a person can face a challenge and rise above it, and we rejoice with Walter when he finally retires and finds his "happy place:" the joy of sailing on the ocean.
