Description

About the work:

Funeral in the South is a non-fiction poetic memoir and unapologetic account of family, faith, and culture. Food for the Soul. An internal search and reckoning for emotional survival and spiritual peace. For closure and healing. For Hope.

Funeral is Brown’s Dixie-based account of the Journey of Life and Love, Death and Deliverance, across generations from the swampy, tobacco roads of the Carolinas, to Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry and far beyond, returning for a final Homecoming halfway between Heaven and Hell. It's the Crossroads for the rescue and redemption of the Heart of a Child. It is the Gospel Truth of a lost dying culture and one family as well as one man’s rediscovery of its sacred self. It is reclamation of the Soul. An authentic southern tale of laying the past to rest. In your heart.

(Contains mature language, powerful spiritual imagery, the best Soul Food ever cooked, and the most Amazing Grace of all. Love.)

About the author

John "Hound" Brown:

Born into the chaos of the late ‘60s and torn between the unyielding philosophies of the Bible Belt, the spirituality of the Civil Rights movement, and the idealism of the hippie culture, John “Hound” Brown is a Nashville-based musician/singer-songwriter as well as satirist/homegrown philosopher and author.

He has toured, written, and recorded with national country acts since 1993 including the Zac Brown Band, John Berry, Martina McBride, Susie Bogguss, Billy Dean and more. Career highlights include numerous album credits as a musician and writer, including a Grammy winner, a full length musical; The Bell Witch, and three indie albums/EPs: Next of Kin, Plowology-Stompin' Grounds and Rolling Smoke. All available on iTunes/ CDBaby.

Brown co-penned the Joe Nichols Universal title-track, Real Things in ‘07, and his literary work filled the Zac Brown Band folk art/cookbook Southern Grounds in 2010. Brown is heavily influenced by artists such as Jackson Browne, the Allman Brothers Band, Darrell Scott, Rodney Crowell and Guy Clark, Mark Twain, Lyle Lovett and Randy Newman along with authors Rick Bragg, Pat Conroy, Faulkner, Hemingway, and of course, GOD and the Bible.

A frequent guest on the syndicated radio show the BIG SHOW with JOHN BOY and BILLY  --- “Hound” continues to write, perform, and spread what he calls, “the Gospel of BBQ." And after an epic personal journey, delivers his first serious literary statement with a soon to be classic, FUNERAL in the South!

Artist-Author is available for live performance bookings on 2018 "Bless Your Heart" Book-Tour, featuring original music and readings from FUNERAL. From acoustic private House Concerts-BBQ's, to church appearances and full band theater performance. Contact [email protected]

Engrossing Well written and painfully honest. Oh yes, the mind is a marvelous thing. It picks through the rubble and the tender to preserve certain joys, experiences, pains to be nudged and dealt with. I told myself, it's only a book but...a little close for comfort. Colorful and cantankerous assembly of individuals. A true breed among ourselves...Southerners...when we give God back one of our own. A necessary read. Read more

Funeral In The South Such an honest and inspiring Southern-based story of a journey to find peace in a life that has more than its fair share of loss and struggle. As dominant as the thread of struggle is throughout the book, the story of love and compassion is even more powerful. It is evident that the author poured his heart and soul into this book and anyone who reads it will be truly moved by that. The story is told honestly, poetically and with humor woven in appropriately making the book captivating and hard to put down. It is impossible to read without seeing a piece of yourself or your family portrayed here. I personally laughed, cried, and did a lot of thinking about love, sacrifice, forgiveness, and the meaning of life and death. This is a must read, not only for those who will relate to this southern setting, but for anyone who wishes to be genuinely touched by a truly inspiring story. Highly recommend! Read more
