Este libro busca ser una revisión de la literatura ya establecida para la teoría del jazz en español, ya que prácticamente todos los antecedentes se encuentran escritos en inglés. Este material presenta la escala pentatónica y sus principales variantes, vista desde el enfoque teórico y práctico del jazz. Incluye: formas de estudio, análisis de solos de Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman y Johnny Hodges, además un estudio profundo de la relación con los modos de las escalas mayor, menor armónica y menor melódica, así como con otras escalas (Disminuida y Hexáfona). Finalmente incorpora tres estudios escritos por el autor y transportados para los principales instrumentos empleados en el jazz, donde se muestran las principales aplicaciones de la escala pentatónica en estructuras armónicas populares de este género musical.
About the author
Tonatiuh is a Mexican arranger/composer and saxophonist. He started studying music in 2002 at Universidad Veracruzana studying classical saxophone. From 2004 to 2009 he attended the Xalapa JazzFest, imparted by Berklee College of Music professors. In May 2011 Tonatiuh concluded his Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz and Afro-Caribbean Performance at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. In June 2015, he finished his Master’s Degree in Jazz Arranging and Composition at William Paterson University (New Jersey), where he also held a position as a Graduate Assistant, besides receiving the 2015 “Music Scholar Graduate Award”. Among his professors are Jim McNeely, Pete McGuinness, Cecil Bridgewater, Armen Donelian, Marco Pignataro, David Sanchez, Luis Marin, Charlie Sepulveda, Rex Gulson, Edgar Dorantes, Ryszard Siwi, Rafael Alcala, Victor Mendoza and Oscar Stagnaro. He also had the opportunity to participate in master classes with some of the most renowned jazz musicians in the world such as: Paquito D’Rivera, Bill Pirce, Eddie Gomez, Luis “Perico” Ortiz, Giovanni Hidalgo, Danilo Perez, Miguel Zenon, Jim Snidero, Joe Lovano and Kenny Werner, among others. Tonatiuh has developed his professional career through the big band, where he has shared the stage with artists such as: Eddie Gomez, David Sánchez, Luis “Perico” Ortiz, Luis Marin, William Cepeda, Luis Bonilla, New York Voices, Oscar Hernandez, Mark Taylor, Rich Perry and Vincent Herring. In 2015 he also performed in the renowned Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, in New York City with the William Paterson Jazz Orchestra. He founded and directed the first big band in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico in 2007. In 2009 he was the coordinator of the first Jazz workshop by the Instituto Tlaxcalteca de la Cultura, Mexico and was the host and producer of “Round Midnight”, a jazz radio program produced by the Universidad Autonoma de Tlaxcala, Mexico from 2008 to 2011. During 2012, he did a series of didactical concerts at elementary schools of the state of Tlaxcala. Among his commissioned works are: the score for the short film “Prelude” by Gran Angular, featuring renowned mexican actor Damian Alcazar; the score for the theater play “Table dance” by ContArte; arrangement for string orchestra and jazz group by the saxophonist and educator Marco Pignataro; arrangement for big band and organ of “Nizza” for the organist Rhoda Scott and the arrangement for big band of “O Holy Night” for the singer Persi Vignola (The Voice Mexico), produce by FerChe Group. Nowadays he is a full time professor at the Centro de Estudios de Jazz of the Universidad Veracruzana (JazzUV). He is a member of the Xalapa Jazz Orchestra where he holds the position of baritone saxophonist and co-director. Nin Yolkokol (This Passion) is his most recent music production as soloist, composer, arranger, conductor and producer. He has two books “Manual de Armonia Moderna” and "Escala Pentatónica"
