Overview
Butterfly Hug gently walks a child through the EMDR experience. The goal of this book is to introduce a child to the unique process of EMDR prior to treatment, preparing them with greater comfort and confidence as they approach their therapeutic experience.
Description

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. in the late 1980's. This method of psychotherapy combines various therapeutic approaches with use of bilateral stimulation, either left/right eye movement, sound or tactile stimulation, which repeatedly stimulates opposite sides of the brain. This process seems to unlock the neuropsychological system, the basis of the mind/body connection. While the bilateral brain stimulation is occuring by tracking ther therapist's fingers from side to side (or by by sound moving from ear to ear or by tapping the knees of hands left and right) the client simultaneously focuses on an image and its accompanying body sensations. EMDR appears to move a person to view disturbing events that they've experienced in a new and less troublesome way. EMDR seems to have a direct effect on the way in which the brain processes information. Butterfly Hug gently walks a child through the EMDR experience. The hope is that by introducing a child to the unique process of EMDR prior to treatment, the child will approach their therapeutic experience with greater comfort and confidence.

DISCLAIMER: It is critical the Butterfly Hug be used by only a trained professional. EMDR is a highly precise process which requires in depth training. This book is not intended to be a thorough protocol of the entire process, but merely an overview for a child client to be introduced to aspect of what their therapy experience may involve.
