Breaking God's Heart

The book is a collection of sermons and homilies preached over the past twenty years in Episcopal congregations. The sermons are grouped by the principal seasons of the liturgical calendar. The title comes from the first sermon in the book, which suggests that God doesn't have rules for our behavior but does elect to have a living relationship with each of us. Sin, therefore, is not a matter of our breaking rules but of our breaking our relationship with God and with one another. This theme appears in many of the homilies in this book and is a principal precept of how the author understands the teachings of Jesus as found in the Gospels. These sermons and homilies can be easily used as personal meditations or for small group study.

Court Moore has serve the Church as a pastor, an administrator, and certainly as a preacher. His experience ranges from pastoring a small congregation in a small Oklahoma town to being the rector of a large and thriving suburban parish; to serving on regional and national posts; from administrative posts in a large diocese to the reconstruction of a small diocese trying to recover from a major schism. This collection of sermons and homilies deal with real life issues in the light of the teachings of Jesus, as interpreted by the author's sixty-five years in ordained ministry. The title of the book is taken from the first sermon included in the book, in which Court proposes that sin is not the breaking of God's rules but is rather the breaking of God's heart. This understanding permeates all of the included homilies, as well as being central to Court's understanding of the teaching of Jesus. The included homilies are grouped by the seasons of the Church Year; they are suitable for use for personal meditation and for small-group study.

Court Moore is a retired Episcopal priest who has served as a priest, pastor, and administrator in Oklahoma and Texas for the past sixty-five years. He lives in Plano, Texas with his wife, Barbara, and two cats. Although retired, he serves the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth on its Commission on Ministry.
