Overview

Be transported back in time to late Nineteenth Century New York City and experience the thrill ride of arguably the fiercest winter storm in American history – the legendary "Blizzard of '88." The Great White Hurricane, as it was later coined, takes the entire Northeast by complete surprise, resulting in hundreds of deaths on land and sea. Now imagine that you are a brilliant young meteorologist recently hired on by the US Army's Signal Service Corps – the agency responsible for the nation's first weather forecasts – and the only person who knows what is about to occur. Imagine the frustration of being prevented from sounding the alarm due to the "politics of the day." With an exciting storyline woven like a seamless tapestry throughout an otherwise authentic landscape of this historic event, this novel is bound to fascinate the weather enthusiast, history buff, and general reader alike.

Description
THE BLIZZARD OF 1888, legendary in the annals of American weather history, was among the most ferocious winter storms ever to pound the Northeast. Many hundreds of people perished on land and sea during its three-day reign of terror, including some 200 in New York City alone – ground-zero for this storm. In his debut novel, Tim Minnich paints a vibrant New York City landscape in the weeks leading up to what has been coined "The Great White Hurricane." Bound to fascinate weather enthusiasts, history buffs, and general readers alike, Minnich captures the suspense which culminates in this awesome display of nature, all while vividly depicting life in late Nineteenth Century Manhattan. On Sunday evening March 11th, the denizens of this great metropolis go to sleep completely unaware they'd be awakening to a howling blizzard. All except for young William Roebling, a brilliant meteorologist recently transferred to the New York Office of the US Army's fledgling Signal Service Corps – the agency responsible for the nation's first weather forecasts. Will has painstakingly developed an ingenious system allowing him to predict this historic event days in advance, but his unconvinced Commanding Officer, for political reasons, orders his silence. A conflicted Will feels he must alert his loved ones, and does – only to find himself in a battle for his life at the height of the storm. Minnich deftly combines the drama and excitement of the blizzard with its profound impact on those unfortunate enough to have been caught in its path, simultaneously weaving an engaging tale of true love, faith, and the indomitable human spirit.
About the author

As far back as he can remember, Timothy Minnich has been fascinated with the weather – especially snowstorms. He clearly recalls, as a first-grader (and younger), the winter evenings he'd sneak his transistor radio under his pillow whenever a big storm was approaching, waking every few hours to get the latest forecasts. So it is no surprise that he always knew, while growing up in the Northeast, he would be studying meteorology when he got to college. Tim earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Meteorology from Rutgers University (Cook College) in 1975 and 1978, respectively. In the early 1980's, he went to work for an EPA contractor investigating potential hazardous waste sites under the newly enacted "Superfund" legislation. Having technical responsibility for some 80 environmental professionals, this position afforded him the opportunity to hone his writing skills as duties included extensive report writing and editing. He later joined a national environmental engineering company to start an air services group which he quickly grew to a profitable division. In 1996, with a partner, he founded an air quality consulting firm which they still run today. Despite his meteorology degrees playing only a modest role in his career, Tim never lost his fascination with the weather. To this day, he always makes time to give family and friends the "heads-up" whenever a severe weather event is on the horizon. Over the years, his appetite for devouring novels steadily grew, with a corresponding desire to (someday) pen his own. Then one day in August 2012 the idea hit him, like a ton of bricks, to write Blizzard!! The Great White Hurricane – a calling "too delicious to ignore" as he describes it. He has already formulated the storyline for his next novel. Tim lives in central New Jersey, and enjoys being at one with nature, playing his acoustic guitar, and cheering on his New York Rangers hockey team. He recently celebrated 20 wonderful years with his sweetheart (who is also his wife). They live with her mom (93 years young) and their amazing cat, Spartacus. Tim has three grown children – all with significant others – but no grandchildren yet!

Blizzard -the Great White Hurricane I truly enjoyed this book. No details were left out. I was able to visualize the events and the personal interactions between characters. (I am a sucker for romance.) I usually have a difficult time staying awake at night to read. But since I was was half-way through the book, I was very engaged in the story line and invested in the characters. I had to know what happened next so I took a day off from work to finish it. I was not disappointed!! I have to add that reading about this historical snow storm during a hot summer day in July was truly refreshing. Read more

Blizzard - the Great White Hurricane This is a delightful story with a lot of information on weather forecasting. Additionally the author includes a Prologue that provides background information on the characters and events from before the start of the story. Also included is an Epilogue so the reader knows what eventually happens which wraps it all up nicely. It is so apparent throughout the book, that much research had been done to reflect jargon and daily living of the times. Read more

Descriptive story of probably the most significant weather event to impact New York City A wonderfully detailed and vividly descriptive story leading up to the great Blizzard of 1888. Being a meteorologist I appreciate the authors attention to the details of life at the time and what was experienced living through one of the most impactful storms in the New York Metropolitan area. The story revolves around several characters and how each was impacted by the storm. Highly recommend. Read more

Blizzard!! The great White Hurricane. This book is a great example of what can happen to a city, a state, a nation, the world when important information is withheld from the public. I live in the highlands of Pennsylvania. I love snow and snow storms. The more severe the better. Mostly because we know they are coming. As I read this book "Blizzard!! The Great White Hurricane" I could not help but anticipate the coming of the storm w/ excitement. My excitement when reading of the actual storm was tempered by the suffering of the people and animals of NYC. Such a vivid picture of what people had to endure in and around the City. The book included plenty of relevant factual historical and meteorological information. There was a lot of research put into the writing of "Blizzard!! The Great White Hurricane". Another reason I enjoyed reading it. The character development was such that another book could have been written on the character relationships alone. As a result, I enjoyed reading this book on many levels. I gave the book to my wife (not a big reader) and she enjoyed it also. Highly recommended. JD Read more

By far the best Blizzard of 88 Book Blizzard! The Great White Hurricane is an awesome read. Set in New York City, it brings to life, in accurate historical detail, the late 19th century societal impact from what truly was an unexpected, extraordinary, but natural extreme weather event. The development the character Will Roebling, a young, but brilliant weather forecaster, is captivating. Feeling "alone on an island," Roebling struggles with the realization as being only one who truly knows the magnitude of the approaching storm. In Roebling’s character, what comes to life, is the psychological stress and associated guilt of not having the authority or position to warn city residents of the approaching disaster. Similar to the "Perfect Storm," I hope this novel gets picked up as the basis for a screen play for what I believe could be made into a blockbuster movie thriller. RLS, Freehod, NJ Read more

Blizzard!! I Absolutely loved Blizzard!! My whole Christmas and New Years holiday was spent in bed with the flu. Having this wonderful book to read transported me to another world and created an atmosphere that provided me the best Christmas I have ever had! I had to slow down my reading toward the end as I did not want the book to end. Whether you are a weather buff or not, it is a great read as there is so much human interest. The characters come so to life on the pages and you just can’t resist the time machine that pulls you back to the late 19th century and the impending doom about to befall them. The book is riveting, warm, well written and keeps you on the raggedy edge as the storm intensifies and ravages the eastern seaboard and the lives of our new found friends. An EXCELLENT Read I have finished the novel and will re-read it as the detailed experience offered by the author made me feel like I was there in New York City in 1888 right in the middle of the worst snow storm of the time and I enjoyed the writing style immensely. This novel would easily lend itself to being made into a movie and I only hope that it does. Read more

Blizzard!! The Great White Hurricaine The author provides an exciting window into the times and people experiencing the great blizzard of 1887. Set in New York City, the story follows the ground breaking development of a storm forecasting system by the protagonist Will Roebling. Being a native New Yorker, it was great fun going back into 1880's New York while it experienced the storm of the century. Not being a meteorologist, indeed having little to no understanding of the skill and science involved in storm forecasting models, I also leaned a great deal, and will never view a weather forecast quite the same way again!
