About the author

Mary Lee Montfort got her professional start in the kitchen of the Union Bay Cafe in Seattle, Washington, as a pantry/line cook. Her responsibilities included making all of the chef's homemade desserts.

Mary Lee went on to open her own successful small baking business, Mary Lee's Desserts, in Northern Virginia in 2004. All of her desserts were made to order for every customer by Mary Lee, which quickly set her apart from commercial bakeries. From single cakes to large corporate events, holidays – when Mary Lee routinely baked over 1,000 cookies – to galas and Bards Alley Bookstore & Café, her desserts were always known for their quality and amazing taste. Mary Lee designed desserts and morning goodies for the cafe within Bards Alley Bookstore in Vienna, Virginia, and was so proud to have her creations available in retail.

Mary Lee is an advocate for Marriage Equality and the LGBTQ community and as such, proudly participated in the Chefs for Equality Galas (swag bags!) in Washington DC. Mary Lee believes in passing things forward and has covered all of the costs of designing, producing, distributing, and marketing her cookbook herself so that she can donate ALL of the profits from each book's sale to three charities doing amazing work: World Central Kitchen, The Trevor Project, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Thank you!! Mary Lee Montfort’s book makes baking accessible for someone like me, an inexperienced baker. I just made her granola, which is fabulous. Now, I can’t wait to bake a cake! Over the years, I have tried many different granolas, mostly purchased from restaurants. I’m that discerning! This Orange Blossom one is delicious. The ginger and citrus in the background are wonderful. So easy to make too. Eating it feels like a real treat and also healthy—that perfect balance. Thank you Mary Lee Montfort for your recipes and crystal clear instruction! Read more

Like having a friend in the kitchen I am thoroughly enjoying Baking the Best of Mary Lee's Desserts. Success in the baking department has never been a sure thing for me, so I had a back up dessert planned for my family get-together. But, I followed Mary Lee's recipe, and helpful tips, and the cookies came out perfect. First time for me! I look forward to baking the m and m bars and fallen angel cake soon. This book is a great resource, and a way to help some great charities too. Read more

Fabulous What a treat to have a collection of Mary Lee’s desserts! I have enjoyed her delicious baked goods for years from her home-based business and it is generous of her to share the “ secrets of her trade “. Her recipes are easy to follow with helpful tips along the way. There is a broad selection of desserts and the accompanying beautiful photos makes it hard to choose! I have already baked one of my personal favorites of hers, “Fallen Angel”. Fabulous! I have wanted this recipe for years and am thrilled it is now available in her cookbook. “Baking the Best of Mary Lee’s Desserts” is a welcome addition to my cookbook collection. Read more
